The means of life -- capital -- is now held as private property. The continued existence of the propertyless is permitted on condition that they give all they produce in return for the barest, coarsest necessaries of life. All that a man hath will he give for his life. The private property system has already doomed over two million men to a life of enforced idleness and slow starvation in the United States. More wretched than the chattel slave, these wage-slaves can find no master willing to give them work or bread. Where is the boasted liberty of our "free institutions", and the benefits of "our glorious" Republic?
